What is Pitta Bread for Greek Souvlaki Wrap
Pitta bread is a flatbread made from flour, water and salt. It is a staple of Greek cuisine and is often used as a wrap for souvlaki and gyros. The bread can also be eaten with dips like hummus or baba ghanoush.
Ingredients
- Combine the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar and baking soda in a large bowl. Mix well to combine.
- Add the warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms (it should be soft but not sticky).
- Knead for about 5 minutes on a floured surface until smooth then divide into 4 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball by rolling between your hands (this helps create an even distribution of gluten throughout your dough).
- Roll out each ball between 2 pieces of parchment paper until it’s about 3mm thick (you can use as much or little flour as necessary when rolling out your pitas). Use a wide spatula or pizza cutter to cut circles from the rolled out pita breads—I like them about 10 cm/4 inches in diameter—but you could also form them into smaller triangles if you prefer!
- Brush with some olive oil before baking at 180°C/355°F for 10-15 minutes until they turn golden brown on both sides; remove from oven when done and brush again with oil so that they don’t become soggy from absorbing moisture from other foods wrapped inside them!
Greek Souvlaki is a Popular Greek Food
Souvlaki is a popular Greek food. The souvlaki wrap is the most famous Greek dish and this pita bread recipe is a must for your homemade Greek souvlaki wrap.
The word “souvla” refers to skewers used to grill kebabs popular in Greece since at least Byzantine times. It can be traced back to ancient Greece when it was called “souvalia”, while its appearance today can be attributed to Turkish influence on Greek cuisine during the Ottoman era (14th-19th centuries).
Served with homemade greek salad and of course tzatziki sauce
It’s important to have a good tzatziki sauce to go with your souvlaki wrap. The best way to make it is to mix equal parts Greek yogurt, chopped cucumbers, and garlic in a bowl. Then add salt, pepper, and lemon juice to taste.
If you’re making greek salad for the first time then this is what you’ll need: tomatoes (chopped), cucumber (chopped), shredded red cabbage (optional), feta cheese crumbles or cubes of feta if you like it that way better than crumbled feta cheese (about 1/4 cup per person), black olives sliced in half lengthwise or quartered depending on how big they are but not too small since they’ll get lost throughout all of your other ingredients otherwise!
Throw some parsley into this mix too if needed because sometimes I find that my salads are lacking without a little green coloration somewhere within their depths–it can be hard finding bright green dots amidst all those browns… Anyway there we go with our greek salad ingredients set up nicely before us ready for use later today when making our tasty wraps 🙂 Finally we have some olive oil drizzled over everything followed by lemon juice squeezed onto those olives which will help soften them up just enough so neither one gets too mushy when mixed together later on down at home here with our homemade wraps.
