- Active Time: 10 minutes
- Total time includes preparation, cooking and cleanup. It also includes the time it takes to make the whipped cream, if you do that before hand.
- Active time is when you actually spend in the kitchen, cooking this recipe. You can do other things while it cooks, like go for a walk or clean your house (or even read a book!).
Active Time: 10 minutes
- Make the funnel cake batter.
- Fry up your funnel cake and get it nice and golden brown, then let it cool slightly before frosting.
- Prepare your frosting, either by making a batch of our easy powdered sugar frosting (just 4 ingredients!) or using store, bought buttercream if you’re in a rush. Then spread on as much or as little of it as you want!
- Chop up an entire package of Oreos. Divide them equally among four plates/dishes, then layer them attractively on top of each other so that there are four distinct layers when all is said and done: bottom cookie layer (approximately one third), Oreo filling layer (approximately one third), top cookie layer (approximately one third), final Oreo filling layer (approximately one third). This will make for an interesting visual presentation when served at parties!
1 small box white cake mix, plus ingredients to make it (eggs, butter, water)
For the easiest route to a sweet treat, use a box cake mix. These are readily available at most supermarkets and can be made with just eggs, butter and water. To make this recipe you’ll need one small box white cake mix plus the ingredients to make it (eggs, butter, water).
If you want to go homemade, that’s fine too! Just follow our recipe below for an easy funnel cake batter — no need for extra ingredients like baking powder or soda here — then pour or spoon into hot oil as directed below.
1½ teaspoons cocoa powder
The amount of cocoa powder you use will depend on the brand and strength. The best place to start is with 1½ teaspoons, but feel free to adjust it up or down depending on your preferred flavor. You can also make powdered sugar at home by finely grinding granulated sugar in a food processor and then sifting out any large particles.
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Vanilla extract is the most common form found in grocery stores, though you can also find vanilla paste or bean paste.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon vanilla paste (such as Nielsen, Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste (such as Nielsen, Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste)
⅛ teaspoon salt
The added salt helps improve texture by weakening gluten strands in dough and allowing them to stretch easily during frying (which means more delicious crumb!). Also important: if you don’t have enough sugar in your batter, there’ll be no need for any extra sweetener when frying because salted butter tastes better than unsalted butter.
Vegetable oil, for frying
In a deep fryer or a large pot, heat oil to 375 degrees. Make sure to use vegetable oil for this recipe because it will not impart any flavor like olive oil would.
Use a thermometer and check the temperature of the oil every few minutes with it inserted in your batter.
1 cup prepared chocolate frosting, store, bought or homemade

If you want to make your own frosting from scratch, go for it! It’s super easy and fun (and delicious).
12 Oreo cookies, roughly chopped
To make this step easier, I used a food processor. You can also use your handy dandy food chopper.
