A Flan Dessert!
This is a simple, traditional dessert that tastes like nothing else. It’s also very easy to make and freezes well, so you can make a big batch and enjoy it for days!
Flan de huevo (Egg Custard)
Flan is a type of custard dessert. The basic flan recipe consists of four main ingredients and can be made in minutes: milk, sugar, eggs and vanilla extract. Other variations include adding fruit or chocolate. Flan de huevo is one of the most popular desserts in many parts of the world including Spain where it originated from. It is believed that flan was named after its main ingredient which is eggs; however this has not been confirmed yet by any historian or food expert so far.
Flan has become very popular in other countries as well! In Mexico they have created their own version called Crema Catalana which contains cinnamon and almonds along with some caramelized sugar on top (you’ll learn how to make this later on).
Ingredients
- Eggs: 4
- Sugar: 1/2 cup
- Salt: 1 tsp
- Vanilla extract: 1 tsp
- Evaporated milk: 1/2 cup
- Sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated): 1/2 cup
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Grease a 9, inch pie plate with butter.
- Beat the eggs, sugar, and vanilla together in a small bowl until foamy. Pour into the prepared pie plate. Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown on top and set around edges (middle will still be slightly wiggly). Allow to cool before serving warm or chilled!
Cooking Notes
- This recipe is a great way to use your leftover eggs.
- If you’re planning to make this as part of a meal that includes pork, add some minced garlic or onion to the bowl of ground meat before shaping it into patties.
- The cilantro topping is optional, but it adds an extra layer of flavor and looks beautiful!
Pro Tip
You can use any type of milk you want to make this flan, as long as it’s whole, not skim or reduced fat. You’ll need at least 1 cup (250ml) per egg; if you’re using a smaller glass dish and have less than 1 cup (250ml) of milk left, add water until you reach that amount.
- For sugar, use whatever granulated sugar is available in your area—white, brown or raw cane sugar. If you prefer honey instead of all, purpose granulated sugar for any reason other than its natural sweetness factor and lower glycemic index level (that is, it won’t raise blood glucose levels as quickly), go ahead and use honey instead—just note that it won’t caramelize the way that all, purpose does when cooked with butter or cream during baking processes; so if appearance matters most to you then stick with regular old table sugar!
Egg Custard is best to serve with
You can serve Egg Custard with fresh fruit, toasted nuts or seeds, or any other add, ins of your choice. It’s also delicious plain with a dollop of whipped cream.

Add, ins and Variations
Flan is a dessert that you can add your own personal touches to, whether that means making it sweet or savory. If you want to make the flan sweeter, a pinch of sugar can be added before baking. You can also add vanilla extract for more flavor.
