What is Cajun Alfredo with Shrimp
Cajun Alfredo with Shrimp is a creamy, saucy pasta dish that’s very easy to make. The shrimp will be cooked in a skillet with Cajun seasoning and garlic, then tossed with cream and butter before serving over your favorite pasta.
This dish is great for those who love their pasta but want something different than traditional alfredo sauce. It’s also perfect if you’re trying to eat healthier because it has fewer calories than traditional versions of alfredo!
Ingredients
- 1 pound of shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 1 cup of heavy cream (or half and half)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 2 teaspoons onion powder or fresh chopped onion to taste. You can substitute chicken stock for the water if you want to make it thicker; this will add more flavor as well!
Methods
- Cook pasta according to package instructions.
- Make the sauce: In a small saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds; add tomatoes with juice and bay leaf; season with salt and pepper if desired. Bring to a simmer; reduce heat to low and cook until thickened slightly (about 10 minutes). Stir in butter one tablespoon at a time until fully incorporated into the sauce before adding another tablespoon of butter. Set aside while preparing shrimp (do not drain pasta water when cooking).
Add ins and Variations
You can also add in other ingredients to make your own unique version of this recipe. Here are some ideas:
- Add in chicken or shrimp. You’ll need about 2 cups of meat, so if you’re not sure how much you’ll need, just throw in a couple handfuls and see how it tastes!
- Add in veggies like mushrooms or peppers for an added boost of flavor without adding any calories (or carbs).
- If you’d like a heartier meal, add sausage as well! Just cook it up with some garlic and onion until cooked through before stirring it into the creamy alfredo sauce.
- Want something more spicy? Try using hot sauce instead of Tabasco! It’ll give everything a nice kick without being overpowering–just be careful not to put too much on there because it can get pretty hot if eaten too quickly…and don’t forget about those fingers–they might burn quickly too…so watch out!
- You can use either fresh or frozen shrimp for this recipe—just be sure to drain them before adding them! If you’re using frozen on hand and don’t have any fresh ones handy, just make sure that each has been thawed out (or at least partially thawed) before adding it into your skillet along with everything else so that no steam escapes during cooking time.
Pro Tip
If you’re looking to make a more traditional alfredo sauce, add some water or cream. You can also add butter and cheese if you’d like!
Special Note
Make sure you have a big pot to boil the pasta in. This will ensure that all of your ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the entire dish. If you don’t have room for everything in one large pot, make sure that each item is cooked separately and then added to their respective sauce at different times. For example, if you’re making shrimp Alfredo with penne pasta, start cooking the penne first; then add shrimp; then add heavy cream and cheese; finish off by adding parmesan cheese last so it doesn’t melt into your other ingredients (and also because it’s delicious).
Cajun Seasoning:
Cajun seasoning is a blend of herbs, spices and other seasonings used to enhance the flavor of food. It’s often used in soups, stews and other dishes that need extra flavor.
You can make your own cajun seasoning by mixing together 1 tablespoon each of dried parsley, onion powder, black pepper and paprika in a small bowl. Add salt to taste if desired—the amount will depend on how salty you like your food! Mix well so that all ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the mixture; then store it in an airtight container until ready to use

Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 lb of medium shrimp (16-20 count), cleaned and deveined (optional)
- 2 tablespoons of butter or margarine
- 3 tablespoons of flour (or all purpose flour) – for thickening the base
For thickening the base:
2 tablespoons of milk or cream – for thinning out any leftover sauce from cooking your pasta.
2 cups of chicken broth or water – if using chicken broth instead of water, increase by about 1/4 cup at this point so there isn’t too much liquid left over after adding everything else.
