Chocolate Banana Bread
This is a very simple recipe that’s great for those who are not fans of baking. It’s also a great way to use up bananas that have gone a bit too soft, as well as an easy way to get kids involved in their own kitchen time!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all, purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar * 3 large eggs , beaten until foamy in a large mixing bowl (preferably glass) * 2 teaspoons vanilla extract * 3 tablespoons coconut oil , melted and cooled slightly (but not too much!) to room temperature * 2 ripe bananas , mashed with a fork or potato masher until fairly smooth but still with some chunks of banana remaining.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl.
- Mash bananas in a separate bowl then add eggs and vanilla extract to bananas and mix well until smooth.
- Add banana mixture to flour mixture and stir until just combined (do not overmix). Pour batter into prepared loaf pan and spread evenly with spatula or knife for even distribution of chocolate chips if you’re using them! After pouring the batter into my pan I used a spoon to move it around slightly so that all of the corners were covered before putting it into the oven for about 40, 45 minutes! I also checked on mine at 30 mins just so that i could know whether or not i needed more time on my next batch! You want this bad boy golden brown like me!!
Cooking Notes
- The cooking time for this bread will depend on the size of your pan. Make sure to check your oven regularly and pull the bread out when it’s done.
- If you don’t have a pan of the right size, feel free to use two smaller pans instead!

Add-ins and Variations
- Add chocolate chips for an extra, chocolaty loaf.
- Add nuts for a nutty, crunchy bite.
- For an unexpected twist, add dried fruit or spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter.
- If you want to take this banana bread over the top, a glaze or frosting really finishes it off nicely! You can use traditional buttercream frosting (made from mixing sugar and butter) or even make your own ganache with melted chocolate and cream. Or keep things simple by spreading on some jam or jelly after baking and cooling the banana bread before cutting into slices.
For another fun way to enjoy this recipe, try topping it with a streusel topping made up of brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and butter melted together until spreadable—then sprinkle it over your slice of warm banana bread before serving!
